Oil Beetle in Defensive Posture

Oil beetles get their name from the protective poison that oozes out of their leg joints when they are attacked. They curl up into a defensive posture like this.

Despite being one of the largest insect I've ever found in the UK, they are not at all scary or vicious. Unless you're a bee, in which case they'll send their children to eat your children.
